Brushcutter PPE: How to protect yourself when working with your brushcutter

In order to work as safely as possible with your brushcutter, you must wear the proper clothing and equipment in addition to adopting a safe working technique. Brushcutter protective clothing must be fit for purpose and not obstructive; it should also fit snugly. You should not wear clothing that can get caught in wood or scrub. Also do not wear a scarf, tie or jewellery. Tie long hair up at shoulder height and secure with a head scarf or hat.

Safety starts with your head: wear a safety helmet during thinning work, when working in high scrub and if there is a risk of falling branches or objects.

Safety is paramount when operating a brushcutter: safety glasses should be combined with face protection, as there is a risk of flying objects. Please bear in mind that face protection alone does not offer sufficient protection for your eyes.

STIHL safety glasses not only offer protection against injury, but also feature secure, comfortable fit and lightweight design. The high-quality glasses also absorb harmful UV radiation and ensure a distortion-free view to prevent eye fatigue.

Noise is stressful. Using ear protection when working with a brushcutter will help you to concentrate on your work. If you are working in a noisy environment, STIHL head straps or comfortable ear protectors will insulate against the sound pressure and frequencies of motorised machines. We recommend either using a helmet with integrated ear protection or opting for separate ear protection. Eye protection should never be forgotten.

A sturdy work glove, preferably made of leather, will ensure a secure grip. We recommend the practical hand guard which has been specially developed for clearing saws.

Leg protection for working with brushcutters

It is important to wear tight-fitting clothing when working with your brushcutter. Even if you only use your brushcutter from time to time, leg protection may be a good idea. Our cut protection trousers are safe and offer the right fit.

Protective clothing can’t do everything! No protective clothing can offer absolute protection. It is no substitute for safe working practices. It is therefore essential to observe the safety instructions in the user manual for your brushcutter.
